Job Description TITLE: Junior Counselor VINS Nature Camp Program (Summer 2008) SUMMARY: Junior Counselors assist VINS camp staff to deliver nature day camp programs to children in grades PreK through 8. REPORTS TO: Lead Counselor UPDATED: January 31, 2008 VINS' Nature Camp Programs are designed for children in pre-K through 8th grade. We currently serve communities in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire and in the Manchester and Burlington areas of Vermont. Job locations are in Quechee, Vermont at the VINS Nature Center, Hanover, New Hampshire at Storrs Pond Recreation Area or in Burlington, Vermont at the Ethan Allen Homestead. JOB DUTIES: Assist in the daily supervision of camp participants. Conduct lessons and lead activities at the discretion of the Lead Counselor. Assist in the daily set up and take down of camp materials. Assist in all camp activities, including arts and crafts, trail hikes, games, storytelling, and snacks. Participate in daily debriefing and contribute to overall success of the camp program. Attend one mandatory training session conducted at VINS Nature Center in Quechee, VT . Commit to at least two, week-long camp sessions (Note: Work hours are 8:30am-4:30pm daily. Camp hours are 9am-4pm). QUALIFICATIONS: All applicants must be at least 14 years of age and entering the 9th grade in order to apply. Experience working with younger children is preferred but not required. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Flexibility and willingness to adapt to and facilitate change. Interest in learning more about New England's natural history. Good rapport with adult mentors. Strong work ethic. Reliable transportation to and from camp locations each day. COMPENSATION: Junior Counselors 14 years of age and older will be paid a stipend of $100.00 for each week of camp worked. In addition, JC's may request a letter of reference from their direct supervisor at the end of their tenure with VINS. JC's under the age of 14 will not receive monetary compensation but may receive a letter of reference. Note: All Junior Counselors are subject to ongoing performance evaluations and may be dismissed for misconduct at any time without notice.
