The Environmental Citizenship Philosophy During the middle and high school years, students begin to consider their future roles in society as leaders and decision-makers, so they need learning opportunities that will prepare them for this responsibility. Environmental Citizenship (EC) challenges students to explore environmental issues, learn field investigation techniques, and undertake service-learning projects that help prepare them to become informed citizens in their communities. EC caters to the social nature of the adolescent, by providing opportunities for students to work together as a team to investigate and document the natural world. By addressing real environmental issues close to home, EC activities and projects not only promote connections and involvement with the local natural and human communities, but also build critical thinking and problem solving skills. EC teaches educators to understand ecological concepts, become familiar with teaching in the outdoors, and meet school goals through interdisciplinary and service learning opportunities.
