Environmental Citizenship Learning to Make Informed Decisions Grades 5-12
No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. -Change the World Kids
Environmental Citizenship (EC) is designed to give middle and high school students the natural science background and experiences they need to make informed decisions to balance human and wildlife needs. EC challenges young people to work together to understand environmental issues and learn field investigation and decision-making skills in order to:
- Understand the interdependence of life in an ecosystem
- Recognize the importance of healthy ecosystems to humans and wildlife, various factors affecting environmental systems, and options for natural resource management
- Learn how to collect and interpret scientific information to make informed decisions about the
environment
- Play an active role as environmental citizens through community-based conservation projects
Whether learning about habitat destruction of native trout, the importance of vernal pools to Vermont
wildlife, or migration patterns of songbirds, EC students become equipped with the information and tools
needed to become informed citizens and environmental stewards, while developing decision making and
leadership skills.
