Small Wonders Nature Education for the Very Young
Small Wonders is a natural history curriculum designed for 3-6 year olds. It is also a professional development program for anyone who works with young children: preschool teachers, childcare providers, kindergarten teachers, librarians, camp counselors, parents, playgroup leaders and environmental educators. Participants gain valuable natural history knowledge and skills, and access to hundreds of interdisciplinary activities that can be used in the classroom, outdoors and at home. Using hands-on, ageappropriate activities, this program helps early childhood educators build upon children's innate curiosity and interest in nature while developing many academic, social, and physical skills. Children participating in the Small Wonders program learn by doing whether it's feeling the smooth skin of a frog or counting the petals of a flower. Children are encouraged to explore each study topic in a wide variety of ways. Exploring real objects, (such as feathers or deer antlers), singing songs and listening to stories, the children become engaged in the activities. They conduct simple experiments to discover more about the nature of the plants and animals they study. They practice important skills like observing, sorting, predicting and following directions. They spend time outdoors, observing habitats and creatures wherever they're found.
