Held at the VINS Nature Center in Quechee, VT 1/4 mile west of the Quechee Gorge Earth Day Celebration Saturday, April 19 @ 3 PM (followed by a short field trip to our vernal pool) Amphibians of Vermont: Identification, Natural History and Conservation Jim Andrews Research Scholar, Middlebury College Vermont Reptile & Amphibian Atlas Project VT Reptile and Amphibian Atlas Coordinator Jim Andrews will show slides of all of Vermont's amphibians and discuss their natural history, identification, and conservation. After the slide show and questions, we will see a short DVD on VT amphibian migration, listen to calls, and take a short walk to visit a nearby vernal pool and look for amphibians and their egg masses. Free for members and with general admission. International Migratory Bird Day- Tundra to Tropics: Connecting Birds, Habitats and People Saturday, May 10 @ 5 PM Arctic Wings: Shorebirds of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Stephen Brown Director, Shorebird Science Manomet scientist Stephen Brown will present a stunning slideshow based on his research expeditions to the Tundra of Alaska's North Slope, and his book Arctic Wings: Birds of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Arctic shorebirds complete epic migrations between the ends of the earth, highlighting the interconnectedness of the hemisphere, and illustrate the importance of halting global climate change before their habitats are destroyed. The presentation features striking photographs of elusive arctic birds on their breeding grounds, and includes insights into new discoveries about their habitats and the conservation challenges facing them. Raptor Appreciation Day Sunday, May 25 @ 3:30 PM Owls: From Snowy to Saw-whet Norman Smith Sanctuary Director, Blue Hills Trailside Museum & Chickatawbut Hill Education Center Since 1981, Norman Smith has spent countless days and nights, in every imaginable weather condition, observing, capturing, banding and color marking Snowy Owls at Logan International Airport. Data has been collected on roosting, hunting and behavior while on their wintering grounds. Most recently satellite transmitters have been attached to owls to learn more about their movements. Find out what has been learned to date, what questions remain and how this project developed to include research on Saw-whet Owls. Free for members and with general admission. National Trails Day Saturday, June 7 @ 5 PM Jim Fredericks, Executive Director Catamount Trail Association Jim Fredericks, the Executive Director of the Catamount Trail Association will give a multi-media presentation about the history of this 300-mile backcountry ski trail that spans the length of Vermont. The presentation will include the history of how the trail started, how it has progressed over the years, and what is planned for its 25th year anniversary. Also included in the presentation will be avian ecologist JoAnn Hanowski who will talk about the wildlife encountered on the trail. Summer Solstice Celebration Friday, June 20th @ 6 PM Localvore Potluck, Conversation and Music Pat McGovern Upper Valley Localvores Sharon Mueller Produce Manager, Upper Valley Food Co-op Music provided by Dave Clark and company Localvores are advocates for foods grown within their local foodshed, often focusing on foods grown within 100 miles of home. The Localvore movement has sprouted up in response to a food supply that has become increasingly unsustainable. Try your hand at making a potluck contribution using all local ingredients (everyone gets a "wildcard" for salt, spices). Bring your dish to share and we will discuss some of the reasons for choosing local foods and some of the challenges. Pat McGovern and Sharon Mueller will lead a conversation and share information on local foods.
