AVIAN FLU VIRUS: Currently, there is no evidence that humans have been infected with the H5N1 influenza virus through contact with wild birds. All reported human infections have been associated with contact with domestic poultry. It is common for wild birds, particularly waterbirds, to carry strains of avian influenza virus. The precise roles played by migratory birds in the spread of the new virulent H5N1 and its transmittal to domestic poultry and humans remain uncertain and continue to be debated by experts.

Changes to the Wildlife Service Department

VINS has been busy consolidating its staff and live animal collection in Quechee. Our Wildlife Services Department was split between our Woodstock and Quechee locations, making it difficult to adequately service the needs of our birds. During this time of relocation, it was critical that the health of the birds currently under our care came first. As a result, we were unable to take in injured birds while in the process of planning and consolidating in Quechee.

Now that we are finished consolidating staff and live animals in Quechee, we can resume taking in injured, ill and orphaned raptors and songbirds on a space-limited basis. In addition, we will continue to answer wildlife-related calls, and serve as a referral service for people who have found other injured birds, utilizing our network of volunteers to assist with rescuing & transporting birds to licensed rehabilitators and qualified vets.

If you would like to make a contribution to the VINS Wildlife Services Department please contact Allison Stark, Director of Wildlife Services at 802-359-5001 X212 All donations are tax-deductible and support the on-going care of our injured and resident birds.
